After Hours Social Worker

Permanent Part-Time - National Office

“Supporting Families, Caring for Children”

The Open Home Foundation (OHF) is a Christian Community Response and has a vision that every child and young person has the opportunity to grow up in a secure, loving family and receive a depth of care which will bless them throughout their lives.

Make a difference by supporting OHF staff and caregivers assisting our Tamaiti and Rangatahi over the phone.

Calls come from across the country and are resolved remotely by the afterhours team member working from home. Each team member is expected to work on a roster basis that may be a day shift or an overnight sleeping shift.

An allowance is paid for each rostered shift plus an hourly rate for the time taken to respond to calls.

In addition to rostered work, ideal candidates will be available to engage in online team meetings and travel for face-to-face training opportunities.

Applicants will have an ability to build relationships with callers on the phone while navigating computer systems and data bases.

An interest in trauma work, knowledge of disabilities and de-escalating crisis is preferred.

We need availability for two shifts a week with at least one of those shifts on the weekend and holidays in addition to Thursday afternoons for team meetings.

The successful applicant will have:

  • A Social Work qualification
  • Registration with the SWRB or be eligible for registration.
  • Knowledge and experience in care and protection social work and an understanding of disability and trauma.
  • Good knowledge of the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989
  • Availability to be rostered evenings, weekends (regular weekend and evening shifts) and public holidays.
  • Needs to be available every Thursday morning for 2 hours (team meeting)
  • Minimum of 3 hours a week, plus shift allowance and paid time for calls taken.
  • Must be available for weeknights and weekend shifts.
  • Proficient in working with communication technology and systems.
  • An in-depth understanding of how the role recognizes the special relationship between Maori and Tauiwi and strong empathy with the organization's special character.
  • A full New Zealand driver's license is essential.
  • An alignment with the Open Home Foundation’s Christian Kaupapa.
  • This is a Fixed Term - Permanent Part Time position.
