Position Overview: 
The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) – Virtual Health will provide clinical leadership, governance, and strategic oversight for the Virtual Health program. This role is responsible
for ensuring high-quality, safe, and compliant virtual health services while supporting a network of remote General Practitioners (GPs). The SMO will contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, quality assurance processes, and risk management strategies to uphold best practices in Virtual Health.

Key Outcomes

  • Clinical Leadership & Oversight: Supervise and provide leadership for a network of over 30 remote General Practitioners delivering 24/7 virtual health services. Act as a point of clinical escalation for the network, providing guidance and expertise.
  • Governance & Compliance: Ensure adherence to RACGP, ACRRM, and relevant virtual health regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Guideline Development: Provide subject matter expertise in developing and refining clinical governance frameworks for virtual health services.
  • Quality & Safety Assurance: Implement and monitor quality assurance measures, clinical safety protocols, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Professional Support & Mentoring: Offer expert medical guidance, training, and clinical expertise for telehealth GPs.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain direct relationships with client organisations, particularly their Senior Medical Officers, ensuring alignment on clinical service expectations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and drive innovation, process enhancements, and service delivery optimisation within the virtual health program.
  • Contribute to communities of practice and/or clinical groups across the organisation as part of a broader clinical network/connection

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
  • Minimum 10 years clinical experience, with a strong background in digital health and telemedicine.
  • Extensive experience overseeing virtual health service delivery and clinical governance frameworks.
  • Current unrestricted AHPRA medical registration.
  • Demonstrated expertise in digital healthcare delivery.

  • Proven leadership in digital health transformation and virtual health service implementation.
  • Strong understanding of virtual health regulations, clinical standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement clinical governance frameworks for virtual health.
  • Exceptional communication, mentoring, and professional development skills.
  • Ability to establish and enhance collaborative relationships with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Expertise in clinical risk management and quality assurance within virtual health settings.

Technical and Operational Requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in virtual health platforms and digital health technologies.
  • Strong understanding of secure medical communication technologies and data privacy regulations.
  • Experience integrating virtual health models with traditional healthcare systems.
