Job Summary

We are looking for a passionate data scientist with a geoscientific background to join our Applied Science team to continue to build our product and services offering and create value for our clients. The Data Scientist - Geoscience reports to our Lead Data Scientist and will work closely and collaboratively with our Head of Applied Science, Chief Data Scientist and entire Applied Science team to provide geoscientific data science domain expertise to internal and external stakeholders.

Geoscientific data scientists at Datarock are eager to uncover and share stories hidden in geological data. They are comfortable working with new kinds of data and enjoy thinking of innovative ways to solve old and new problems. They are continuous learners, keeping abreast of new techniques and approaches in a rapidly changing and evolving technical landscape. And importantly, they are team players, sharing knowledge and insight to grow the entire team.

This role is full-time and will be Australia-based, candidates must have an existing right to work in Australia.

This is an early career/experienced graduate level position. Base salary on offer is $95,000 to $105,000 AUD + 11.5% superannuation commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work on projects, individually or as part of a team, to deliver high quality data-driven insight into geoscientific problems.
  • Design, build, test and deploy geologically valid machine learning models to internal and external infrastructure.
  • Provide your geoscientific domain expertise across a range of diverse projects.
  • Communicate and share new ideas and approaches with the team to promote shared learning and build team knowledge.
  • As appropriate, be client facing and clearly communicate results.

Requirements

A successful candidate should have the following:

  • Coding experience in Python and/or R. Knowledge of GIS and other geoscience software is desirable.
  • Experience with common data science and machine learning frameworks.
  • Knowledge and experience of the AWS cloud computing stack is beneficial.
  • An understanding of common geoscientific datasets. Familiarity with geoscientific data acquisition methods and techniques is desirable.
  • A growth mindset, a willingness to learn new things and experiment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and express ideas and results clearly and coherently, both verbally and in writing.
  • A demonstrated ability to prioritise competing demands to deliver own work requirements within given timeframes.

Qualifications and experience

  • A degree in geology, geophysics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field, or a demonstrated work history in a combination of these fields.
  • Experience using data science/machine learning to solve geoscientific or geospatial problems.
